⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Julian Subatoi Bashir
Age: 33
Canon: Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Canon Point: Shortly after the events of Season 6, episode 2 “Rocks and Shoals”. Before they’re rescued from the uninhabited planet they’d crash landed on.

Background: Here

Personality:
The first thing to come across with Julian is that he’s cheerful, optimistic, and a bit naive. That’s an excellent surface impression, but...well, that’s all it is, is surface. Sure, he’s truly optimistic, but that’s taken a severe beating with the war and the last month or two before that. He’s certainly not as naive as he projects, but a lot of his initial personality is a carefully crafted mask to appear non-threatening and keep people at arm’s length (and he has pretty long arms). When he’s not putting on his performance face, it’s usually in two situations: when he’s at work, and when he’s around people who he doesn’t have to perform for.

When he’s at work, he’s confident and competent. His joking and cheerful air will disappate and he will become 100% Serious Business. He will not tolerate interruption, people questioning his knowledge, or interfering. He doesn’t have a lot of patience for politics or for the chain of command for the sake of the chain of command. If someone is worthy of his respect, he will give it 110%, but he is not the kind to censor himself or swallow his feelings because someone outranks him, or even if they outpower him. This goes for issues related to his job, or related to his moral core.

Julian is a deeply righteous person, with a hard set of rules that he’s internalized, sometimes even to his detriment. He does not tolerate the idea of sacrificing even one person to save the majority (unless that person is him, he will gleefully work himself to death to stave off his fear of failure.) He has stood up to Jem’Hadar soldiers that would sooner shoot him than look at him, he will stand up to Starfleet admirals who can end his career in a moment, he has not spoken with even his parents for years due to their actions, he has been literally physically and mentally tortured for his ideals, and it has not broken him yet. However, more than his tendency to pick fights with people who can make his life miserable, since his entire reality is based in the perception that his previous self was murdered for Julian to take his place, Julian has a pretty deep sense of self-loathing that can rear its head at times--usually when he’s using his enhancements for something that *isn’t* related to his medical profession. He doesn’t like to think about the fact that he’s as smart as he is because of the enhancements he had. Usually these observations are delivered in an extremely deadpan voice. (For example: calculating how long it would take to get to Bajor from Cardassia without warp drive, as he does in canon. He does it down to the minute easily, but his delivery is completely deadpan.)

This sense of internalized hatred and the fact that he’s stuck in the middle of a pretty brutal war, during which he was fairly recently held as a POW, has also led to a facet of his personality that is dark and cynical. He can be incredibly sarcastic (well, he is British…) and dramatic. He feels less drive to mask this now that his genetic engineering secret is out in canon, at least with people he knows well. As he becomes more and more comfortable with someone, the more likely snark is to come out.

One thing that’s constant--Julian is eager, curious, and excited to learn, he loves his job and is excited about medicine, science, and the entire mission of Starfleet. He’s a true believer in all of the above. He’s also super enthusiastic about meeting new people. This enthusiasm is sometimes overwhelming to other people. Julian in general is overwhelming to other people at some points...he can be difficult to get along with for that reason, and because of his tendency to miss social cues and people’s feelings in his excitement. Some examples: Kira Nerys absolutely hated him at first because he bowled her over with his naivety and arrogance. Chief O’Brien also said, flat to his face, that he hated Julian at first. (And that he doesn’t now.) Sisko probably wondered if Julian would last his first year as CMO. Jadzia...well, Jadzia is literally 800 years old so she kinda rolled with everything, but. Still.

Abilities:
Julian’s genetic enhancements give him the following:
- Enhanced memory recall and mental capacity. He can think much faster than pretty much any unenhanced human and can have multiple trains of thought running simultaneously with ease. (He is going to be an absolute nightmare to speak telepathically with.) He can do complex calculations in his head almost instantaneously. He picks up new knowledge quickly as well--give him a reference book and he’ll be done with it in a couple hours and be able to quote it back to you line by line. Enhanced memory recall means he can remember everything from the age of 7 on flawlessly, his early childhood is muddy though. He is very observant and if you give him enough time, he will be able to pick apart almost any mystery.
- Enhanced sense of hearing and sight. He can hear very high pitched and faint sounds pretty easily, though he has to be pretty close to the source. His eyesight is perfect and he can process sensory input faster than another human can, so his reaction time is accordingly sped up. Speaking of which…
- Reflexes are pretty much instantaneous, though he’s not dodge-a-bullet fast.
- Hand-eye coordination is enhanced as well, he’s an absolute monster at darts when he’s not letting people win. This also means he’s a crack shot with a phaser.
- Enhanced strength--he’s a lot stronger than he looks, but not to the level where he can lift someone over his head. (I mean, he looks like a stiff wind might blow him over, but.)
- A really bad sense of self-worth :(

Alignment:
Sosyne. He is, 90% of the time, calm, analytical, and level-headed, especially in crisis. But he’s also fairly fast to anger--usually at some kind of injustice. He will then (calmly) proceed to tell you exactly where you went wrong before the yelling starts. (And there will probably be yelling.)

Other: Due to his canon point, Julian will be carrying (if allowed), a standard Starfleet medical kit. Medical kits contain a medical tricorder, a small dermal regenerator, a hypospray, and a trauma kit. The tricorder and dermal regenerator are self-powered and would eventually need to be charged (their power sources are much more efficient than a modern cell phone or anything, though, so it’d take a while...at least for the tricorder, the dermal regenerator will probably brick pretty fast.)

He also has a combadge on his uniform, this would allow him to speak with other people on the same network or a properly configured computer. It also acts as a universal translator--that aspect of it will still function, even if it’s unnecessary, but the communication function will not work. Last, he will have a handheld phaser that can be clipped to the waist of his uniform. The phaser can be completely drained on entry if necessary.
